According to WHO data, researchers say there are an average of between 1.3 million and 4 million cases of cholera worldwide each year, and between 21,000 and 143,000 cholera-related deaths.
Philip Barboza, head of the WHO team investigating diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, said the increase in cholera outbreaks was completely unprecedented. This widespread outbreak is more deadly than in previous years.
Regarding the increase in cases and deaths of cholera epidemics after a decline in the past few years, Barboza said that climate change is directly influencing the increase in the spread and deaths of the disease. Experts say that cholera has also spread in refugee camps in Lebanon, Somalia, and Nigeria this year. A WHO official has stated that cholera epidemics are clearly related to environments of poverty and insecurity.
